Television deals with the spatial continuum of the
planet, and every television station in real time or a
repeat or a rerun, all the spaces of television are
contiguous, coextensive—they make one universal
space which is our global village. It’s villagy to the
extent that everybody gets in on everybody else’s
business, everybody else more or less knows
everybody, may not like everybody, and clearly the
business of what’s happening anywhere in the
world is your business, as well as your business
being there. That’s globally about it, but it’s also
television. I don’t think enough people today when
they talk about the global village realize how much
that metaphor is pertinent to the world of
